Personally, after 5 years of road cycling, I'd somehow made my way to B grade in the local criteriums without any understanding of how to train properly.
I thought I knew, but it turns out doing bunch rides week-in-week-out and competitive dick swinging rides with mates wan't the fastest way to get stronger.
In fact, it was detrimental to my performance gains.
